Arcadia Press Day Spring Summer 2011

The press day at the Arcadia Group this season was something of an epic undertaking. Four floors, five brands...a lot of canapes. Not surprisingly, the seventies vibe sweeping the runways has staked its claim on the British High Street: brace yourselves, would-be-festival-goers, you're about to swoon.

Armed with the SS11 trend knowledge in mind, I arrived at the Arcadia press day with high expectations, in particular for Miss Selfridge, for whom boho festival chic is the mantra no matter what the trend cycle mandates. And my lord was Yasmin really on it this season, South of the Border tinged accessories, chunky gemstone pendants, hippie prints, palazzo pants and a sepia palette--I was in sheer vintage overload. Also, this spring sees more goodies from Miss S' new premium line--including one gorgeous ruffled blouse which Yasmin told me had been exactly replicated from a Victorian original. Just give me some denim cut offs and Glastonbury, here I come!

Wallis was having more of a mod moment than its Arcadian sisters. Lots of color blocked brights, angular lines and crisp whites. There was also a set of Betty Draper-ready tea dresses, perfect for English summers but not exactly my cup of tea, as it were...

DP this spring is embracing the love within--it's all about color and flower power! My favorite pieces included a lush sunflower applique blouse and several crochet pieces. Out of the four, I also felt that DP had the most lush footwear, chiffon tie up gladiators (a la Ferretti) and lacey corked wedges, I feel another Style Whispering coming on...

The lovely Natalie from NatalieHeartlyWears and Aunty Rachel from DP!

Topshop looked to the aesthetic of its Unique show to dictate the rest of its mainline offerings for spring. That is to say, a decidedly seventies disco moment, but with a sort of nineties overlay. That is to say, fringe is full on, the hotpants are super hot and the platforms plastic and clear.
