WHISPERER'S SHOW NOTES
Key trends checklist: more 70's--this time in the form of mustard and brown plaid and hippie ditsy florals (think: your grandparents' upholstery circa 1974). Lunchbox type satchels and backpacks remind me of the Wonder Years.
Production: It was back to school at Versus this season. Literally, though all the girls were late for class (Mistress Missoni had kept them shamefully over), the show began and ended with a school bell a ringing and the girls tromping out one by one onto a field of real grass (cue: fashion hayfever) complete with rusty playground. There were even sweet little daffodils springing up from the set, including right by the backstage entrance where we were sitting!
Hits: I loved the shoes, strappy cork sandals in ditsy florals and matching plaids. The accessories, satchels and backpacks in matching fabrics were sweet as pie and worked brilliantly to help offset the whole innocent-but-not vibe which underpinned the uncharacteristically cutesy yet still sexy collection.
Misses: Though I loved the whole check school girl thing, a few of the looks started to feel repetitive after a while. Good thing Donatella broke it up with some sexy colorblocked numbers (this is Versace we're talking about, after all). One tiny seating SNAFU? Franca Sozzani found herself walking in late from the Missoni show and resigned to the second row (!!!). Good thing I scooted down to make room for Suzy Menkes, would really not have liked to stay after school for detention with her.
Overall verdict: Personally, I loved the whole 70's schoolgirl gone vixen thing, a lot more my style than the usual Versus arsenal of the bold and body con. Looks like Vice Principal Christopher Kane has finally gotten into the swing of things at la Academia Donatella.
