I have recently fallen back in love with what was perhaps my very first ever denim silhouette: le flare, thanks to the lovely folks at
Monkee Genes who were so kind as to send me a pair of my very own. The brand was founded in 2006 by Phil Wildbore to address a niche in the market for reasonably priced denim (sorry, Balmain,
Monkee's Genes hover around the £50 mark) but well-manufactured with respect for both people and planet. Certified as bonafide organic by the
Soil Association,
Monkee's denim is both soft and supple.
The Soil Association ethos means all factory working standards are vetted and considered as important as the environmental factors.
Each and every stage of the denim-making process is taken in to eco-consideration--from the cotton picking down to the content of the button and banana-splashed cheeky label.
Monkee Genes, interestingly enough, come in a unique array of unisex styles, thus enabling boyfriends round the world to enact revenge upon their denim-thieving girlfriends since
Katie Holmes and Current/Eliot popularized le boyfriend.

When the brand approached me to pick out a pair, I decided to go for something unexpected and gravitate away from the boyfriends and skinnies dominating my at-home-denim bar (my collection is shamelessly epic--truly--will blog about it for you one day). I revisited the flare for the first time, really, since
Sevens came on the scene with the basic bootcut, bucking the likes of Express Jeans and their nineties-seventies-redux-flair-for-flare. The jeans in question are the
"Bamboo Booty Jean;" a loose straight leg with a healthy 12-inch flare, jetted rear pockets and even a removable label. The fit was absolutely perfect--sexy and snug round the bum and thighs and long and lean through the leg. Why oh why have I avoided this shape for so long, I asked myself as I slipped one leg after another into the deliciously soft organic cotton. Sleek and stylish, flares are a bit dressier than boyfriends but still retain that slouchy sense of ease. Should definitely be paired with heels, not of the monster variety, but to really bring out the flare shape. As of this month,
Monkee Genes are now available on ASOS, so don't be a monkey's uncle and order a pair today. I promise you won't be disappointed value for money, it's in the genes.
A BIG CW THANK YOU TO MONKEE GENES! XXX
