Richard Sorger: God's gift to Stylists

Every now and then, a new designer comes along who tickles your creative fancy just so. I'm not talking about the kind of designer where you want to swaddle yourself head to toe in all his garments and cannot imagine your life or wardrobe as moving forward without them (not that I wouldn't leap tall buildings in a single bound for the chance, of course). But what I'm talking about specifically here, in the case of Richard Sorger, whom I first chanced upon when his line was being launched at Golborne Road's Convenience Store, is a designer who sets your creative fashion mind on fire, with whom you can't wait to work across the board. In my case, that night, it amounted to a needs must case with respect to a flame silk hand-beaded shift dress (made to order only) which had to had to had to feature in my Connoisseur shoot (and just may have wound up on the cover, ahem ahem), another loose dragon embellished t-shirt silk dress number which gave wing to another shoot concept (Chinese New Year, anyone?) and the illustrations plastered across the wall screamed Sketchbook louder than if the man's hand drawn portfolio had just whacked me in the face. Thanks, Richard.

About the Man

In 2006, Richard started designing his eponymous label which sells worldwide. Clients include Courtney Love, Jennifer Lopez, Cindy Crawford, Kate Beckinsale, Diamanda Galas and Heidi Klum. He has been commissioned to produce special pieces for Swarovski Unbridled and for the Victoria and Albert Museum, who acquired one of his dresses for their permanent collection in 2009. Recently he has collaborated with Meadham Kirchhoff, Manolo Blahnik (for Meadham Kirchhoff) and ASOS (the on-line retailer). In 2006 he co-authored the book called 'The Fundamentals of Fashion' published by AVA Books, and he lectures part-time on the BA (Hons) Fashion Design course at Middlesex University, London.
