she woke me up with a bang, bang
looking' over cross eyed had a big
hunch that the world was a big lie
when I got up all the blood to my head
I got so dizzy fell back into my bed--Dispatch
En route to Blow's press day, with about twenty minutes to kill in the freezing November London evening, I popped into the Goodge Street outpost of designer consignment shop, Bang Bang for a quick and dangerous peek. For some reason, in this capital of vintage, the concept of designer consignement has fallen by the wayside, with Bang Bang and Notting Hill's Retro Man/Woman/Thing being the only worthy culprits known to yours truly. Back home, designer consignment is a way of life. Forget the Loehmanns and Century 21s of the world, shops like NYC's INA offer an endless abundance of recent season, relatively unworn designer duds in mint condition. As soon as something is purchased, it's retail value is automatically halved, so at consignement, even if something still has its original price tag on it, you will always be paying at least wholesale price.
Last week's Bang Bang venture was my first time in the Goodge Street store (I usually frequent the Berwick Street shop) and I ended up finding some great snuggly numbers--a gorilla armed jacket a la Giles Deacon from Emma Somerset and a floor sweeping Mohair wrap coat in a rainbow of charlcoals and heathers. While not exactly the hand beaded Krizia frock for £120 still proudly bearing its original £1700 price tag that I extracted from the back of the rails at the Berwick Street store over the summer, fun perusing nonetheless. My point is: you can't really miss with designer consignment. Whilst every visit may not be a complete bang bang, it's always that one in a million find which keeps you coming back for more.
