The lens behind the soon to be iconic images of the House of Blueeyes is that of photographic visionary Paula Harrowing. Paula, known for her uber-stylized images, has worked with big time players (other than the lovely Johnny, of course) from Co Co de Mer, Amnesty International, Barclays and Sam Roddick. Not just limited to fashion, commercial, portraiture or whatever other genres of photography abound, Paula is a true chameleon of a lenswoman. She has also shot for Shon Magazine, for which yours truly is a contributor. Surely this makes us like editorial sisters in crime. So Tuesday night Paula officially stepped out from behind the lens into the limelight with her debut exhibit, Sweet Shuktara-My India at the Soho Theater Bar. The exhibition chronicles Paula’s journey through Kolkata, India and her involvement with Shuktara - a charity which gives disabled and orphaned children the opportunity to realize their potential.
The result is an array of profound images, moving, emotional and beautiful. Ponderous portraits of a curious blueeyed group of Indian children, innocence shining out like beacons of hope through those crystal peepers despite the destitution in the background, an intricate series of bikes resting against dynamic and colorful backgrounds, and my favorite, a slew of portraits detailing the ritual of the Indian man's shave.
The evening was a bumping one, supposedly ending at 11, the celebration continued long after. Johnny himself made an appearance and Bert brought me an exquisite vintage beaded brocade strapless dress. So after a few rounds of the complimentary beer, a try-on sesh and mini photo shoot ensued. Drinks and dresses, a dangerous combination when there are so many cameras about.
But to Paula, I want to extend sincere congratulations. The exhibit was a triumph, the launch a blast and I look forward to the next one.
The exhibit is on now through January at the Soho Theater Bar @ 21 Dean Street, so drop by and grab a cup of coffee and wander around.
