Last week, at an Emilio de la Morena trunk show at high end designer consignment and all around luxury niche shop, My Favorite Thing, I was reminded that things aren't always as they seem on the runway, and clothes which, during fashion week, failed to pop off the catwalk and etch a permanent impression in your brain and so gets written off as "sigh, boring. Again." But designers don't get to put their duds on the runway without good reason (ok, bffs of Agy or celebrities with a penchant for watching other people sew and sticking their name on the ensuing labels don't count). But it's the details, the little things, like the way the fine pleat of a crepe silk mermaid-esque slips like liquid through your fingers, or the twinkle of a pair of doubly lined iridescent black trousers up close in the light or a zip or tuck or stray button, that one completely misses at a fashion show, save for those lucky ducks in the front row. Thus enter my revised opinion of Emilio de la Morena SS10. Not that I didn't like the collection when it walked, but its simple palette of blacks, whites and pastels and array of clean, constructed shapes simply blended in with the rest. But handling the collection up close, running my grubby paws along the simple curve of a skirt, feeling the lightweight cottons in my hands: suddenly I wanted it all. In particular, I loved the silk crepe skirt/dress ensembles which could be worn together or as separates, the white one with the racer-back with three cut-out holes is probably my favorite.
