SOUL i-D Launch at Christie's

Launch event for exhibition hosted by Christie's South Kensington and sponsored by Diesel, to celebrate the recent publication of a 600-page book entitled SOUL i-D. The auction house showcases the UK leg of a three year international exhibition tour debuting the highlights of this visual anthology. Exhibition runs between March 2-10.

All in all a subdued yet enjoyable night...the champagne ran out about two hours in so we all had to switch to wine which left some of us a bit wobbly in our Nicholas Kirkwoods. A far cry from the antics of fashion week: Johnny Blue Eyes had all his clothes on, Andrew Majtenyi wore hot pink and Kate Moss (tipped to make an appearance) never showed.

But the exhibition was actually one of the more interesting ones I've seen this year, probably because it used star power as its artistic (and marketing) fuel. After a few swigs of complimentary champagne, enough mingling amongst attractive leather-clad and well accessorized guests, you too would probably consider Marc Jacob's ruminations on the warmth of his lover and Paul Smith's two word political declaration "no war" as charming nuggets of ingenuity, probing the depths of your intellect and imagination...Paul Smith, Poet Laureate in the making!

But seriously, superb photos by David LaChapelle, a handful of surprisingly profound images and poignant quotations from designers like Hussein Chalayan and Sophia Kokosalaki and a blank white wall for wine laden visitors to post their own pearls of wisdom (essentially Tweeting with Sharpie) in the end did make for a night with a lot of SOUL.
